As much as I love the holiday season, I can’t say the same for the shopping. I do love buying gifts for my kids (and I treat them all throughout the year), but the pressure of shopping during a six-week period when seemingly everyone else in the world is also shopping… well, it’s annoying, to say the least.
So, I try to find bits of glitter and joy in that holiday shopping, and earning travel rewards with my dollars spent is a large part of that joy. I’m home most of November and December, so I’m ready to spread my wings and fly again once January rolls around, and those travel rewards add up and keep me adventuring.
This year while you’re enjoying the holidays, get the most out of what you’re spending by earning travel rewards.
Pick an airline, any airline – If you possibly can, choose one airline and stick with it. I made the mistake for years of spreading the love around, but last year I decided to pick one, and it’s paying off in free trips, free upgrades and priority status. Being a “one airline only” traveler isn’t always possible, but 95% of the time, I stick with the same one.
Dining Rewards Networks – Did you know most major airlines partner with restaurants to allow you to earn miles when dining out? Sign up online for free, link up your credit card and start earning extra miles for chomping on nom noms.
Social Media – I’m not saying you should stalk your favorite airline, hotel or cruise line on their social media profiles, but well, actually I am saying that. Watch those accounts because they do throw out special discounts, deals and giveaways if you’re paying attention. This isn’t actually a spending tip, but I’m throwing it out there anyhow.
Hotel Reward Programs – If you ever stay in hotels, make sure you join the rewards programs. Every major chain has them and boutique hotel chains often do as well. Whether you choose to save your points for future free hotel stays or convert them to miles is up to you!
Maximimize Money to Miles – Use a credit card with mileage rewards, like the Discover it Miles card.
I admit I’m a wee bit prejudiced because I have one of these (and you know I’m a Discover blogger), but I switched from an airline-exclusive credit card to Discover it Miles last year in the wake of an airline merger, and I’m actually glad it happened.
With a Discover it Miles card, you can earn Miles on everyday purchases, which include your groceries, school books for your kids and, of course, souvenirs on your vacation. And, if you’re not planning a vacation, you can redeem your Miles as a statement credit towards other travel purchases including taxicabs, commuter transportation, or…cash!!
Some of the other benefits of using the Discover it Miles card are:
- 1.5x Miles on every dollar spent
- New cardmembers automatically double all the miles earned at the end of their first year on their Miles card
- Cardmembers can fly any airline, any time with no blackout dates or restrictions
- A $30 annual in-flight Wi-Fi credit
- Miles that never expire
- $0 Fraud Liability Guarantee
- FICO® Credit Score for free on monthly statements, mobile app and online account center
- 100% U.S. – based customer service available all day and night
- Ability to pay your bill up to midnight (ET) the day it is due by phone or online
So as you plan for spring breaks, summer vacations or even holiday travel, the Discover it Miles card can help. Start using it on your everyday purchases, and watch the Miles accumulate. When you’re ready to purchase your tickets and travel, you’ve got a big head start!
