I’ve never seen a bigger pack of meat-eaters than my family. They were probably a pack of wolves in another life. Or lions. Maybe even hyenas. Something ravenous.
They’re hungry, y’all. Hun-guh-ree.
But, I pulled a trick on the family the other day by secretly substituting plant protein in place of meat in a favorite family meal – pasta and meatballs. It was a pretty big risk because as mentioned, the carnivores at my house are serious about their carnivorous ways.
I used Beyond Meat’s 100% plant-based products for the taste test trickery.
Their products include chicken strips, chicken tenders, meatballs and beef crumbles. For my ruse, I went with the meatballs and feisty crumbles.
I made a simple pasta meal and mixed the crumbles and meatballs in with the sauce.
You can’t tell it’s plant protein, can you?
So why am I considering plant protein as an option?
Other than bacon, I really don’t eat a ton of meat. I like it, but I don’t really eat it that often, so I’m completely open to a plant protein substitute that will let me keep eating things like tacos, chili and chicken fajitas without the downsides of animal protein.
I love the idea of going “beyond meat”. The reason I wanted to do a family taste test is so I would know if I could make everyone’s meals with Beyond Meat… at least sometimes. I want my family to get the protein they crave, and since my daughter is a bodybuilder, it’s absolutely essential for her to include it in her diet, but would they accept plant protein?
So who would be my first guinea pig?
The boyfriend, of course! He’s a teddy bear, but he’s not shy about what he likes and and doesn’t like, that’s for sure!
And here’s what happened:
Pretty wild that he liked it, huh? Once I told him, he started to think he could tell the difference, but whatever. He obviously couldn’t tell the difference until I told him there was one!
My daughter was out of town with the boyfriend for the weekend, so she didn’t get to try it yet, but if it passes her taste test, we’re golden. I’ll have to let you know!
What does the Future of Protein look like? Perhaps the meat case will become the “protein” case! We can also expect plant protein to appear on the menus of large restaurant chains and in schools nationwide.
It’s already garnering the interest of elite athletes, like Eric Bledsoe, who is now partnering with Beyond Meat to help communicate to other families the benefits of plant-based proteins.
