The Brunswick Islands in North Carolina are like a secret you want to tell because it’s sooooo good, but you’re afraid to tell too many people for fear of spoiling the magic. Lucky for you, I can’t keep secrets very well.. and this one deserves to be shared.
In a word, the Brunswick Islands are unspoiled. The five barrier islands and six beaches offer a true escape — the kind of escape that leaves you feeling renewed, refreshed and fully rested. Oh, and ready to go back again the next year. And the next. And the next.
My FAM trip group and I stayed in ocean front beach house rentals — a couple days on Holden Beach and a couple days on Oak Island. Renting a beach house is the way to vacation, I tell ya. Not only is there tons of space, privacy and lots of extra amenities, but the vibe is totally laid-back and chill. You just can’t get that same sense of serenity when you’re in a hotel.
Our house on Holden Beach was called ‘Pinch Me’, and that’s exactly what I thought while staying there. There were 10 bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms – room for 25 people! Do you know how much of a cost savings that would be for a family traveling together? Not to mention the fact you can save on cooking meals in the full-size kitchen (more on that below).
Also, having our cars parked in a private driveway for easy access was wonderful. There are very few businesses within the residential areas, so you won’t have to endure the traffic congestion that most beach side communities suffer from. It’s a huge perk of the Brunswick Islands !
My bedroom faced the ocean, and since Brunswick Island NC beaches run east to west, the sun rises and sets over the ocean, so I could see them both from my room. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Truthfully, I didn’t spend much time in my room though. In the daytime, we were off adventuring, and in the evenings we spent time in the balcony rocking chairs enjoying the view, the lull of the ocean waves and a glass of wine.
Heaven on earth.
And remember that fully equipped kitchen I mentioned? We had a wonderful chef come and prepare us the most delicious dinner using fresh local seafood — absolutely amazing.
When we left Holden Beach, we went to yet another gorgeous ocean front beach house on Caswell Beach (which is almost entirely residental) called ‘Sea Forever’. It was equally dreamy inside and outside.
We had a private boardwalk out to the beach, and strolling along the shore in the early morning was one of the things I remember most fondly.
It was fun to see dogs playing catch and trotting down the beach too. All of the Brunswick Island beaches are pet-friendly!
A special treat about this beach house was being able to see both the Oak Island lighthouse and the Bald Head Island lighthouse. Pair that with a beautiful sunrise, and again… it’s heaven on earth.

My visit to the NC Brunswick Islands was one of the most peaceful, blissful beach vacations I’ve ever experienced, and I’ll absolutely rent a beach house the next time I go back. It’s definitely the way to go!
