As we enter peak flu season, I can’t help but be a little nervous. In recent years, there have been so many severe cases, many of which included hospitalization, and it breaks my heart especially since an annual flu vaccination could have made all the difference.
My mom suffered multiple strokes and developed vascular dementia, so she spent her final years in a nursing home, but it was a bout with pneumonia after contracting the flu that weakened her body so much she could no longer stand. She spent her remaining time in a wheelchair and her final months in bed. I lost her in January and my heart aches for her every day.
When it comes to the flu and chronic health conditions, the combination can be life-changing or deadly.
If you’re age 50 and above (or have loved ones who are), I encourage you to get your flu vaccine right away. It takes two weeks for the full antibody protection to develop, so the sooner you get the shot, the sooner you and those around you who may be especially vulnerable (babies, young children and adults ages 50+) are protected.
Since I’m in the latter category of adults ages 50+, I always get my flu shot. It’s during this stage of life that people tend to develop chronic health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and cancer, and the flu can worsen those symptoms dramatically.
Watch Jim’s short video about how contracting the flu changed his life forever.
Multiple studies have found an increased risk of heart attack and stroke the first few days following a flu infection. Influenza can be dangerous and deadly for anyone, but for those with chronic health conditions, the risk is particularly high.
Now is the time to help protect yourself as best you can against flu-related dangers. Go to GetMyShot.org to learn more and talk with your healthcare provider to find the best flu vaccine option for your personal needs.
