I get stressed about holiday shopping every year. I want to get my family THE BEST GIFTS but my budget doesn’t usually allow me to spend as lavishly on them as I would like. Luckily, over the years I’ve come up with a few ways to get meaningful gifts that don’t break the bank and won’t get returned or relegated to the back of a closet somewhere. Without further ado, my best holiday shopping tips!
Keep track of loved ones’ needs & wants throughout the year
This tip requires a bit of advanced planning, but it’s smart to use a notes or to-do list app to keep track of gift ideas and things your loved ones mention throughout the year. (You can also use it to keep track of gift ideas for yourself, for when Santa asks.) I keep my gift list in Todoist, which I’ve written about here before.
Experiences make great gifts…
Gifting an experience, like a weekend away, skydiving, or simply a day of uninterrupted quality time together, is perfect for people who are hard to shop for.
…and so do gift cards!
Haters will say gift cards are impersonal, but when have you ever received a gift card and been mad about it? Exactly. By choosing a gift card to a store you know they love, you’re not only personalizing the gift, but allowing them to pick out exactly what they want!
There are a number of places to snag a gift card, but if you’re an eligible Chase cardmember with Ultimate Rewards, you can redeem rewards for more than 150 different gift cards! Even better, throughout November, Chase Freedom cardmembers can save 10% on some of the best ones. Learn more about this limited time offer — and do it fast before the gift cards run out!
With 150 gift card choices including restaurants, travel, apparel, and beauty, it’s easy to find something for everyone on your list!

Don’t be ashamed to look for discounts and deals
Finding good deals on gifts doesn’t make you a cheapskate, it makes you smart.
- Ibotta and Ebates: to unobtrusively get rebates on shopping you’d already be doing
- Groupon: for good deals when you pre-pay for things — I used Groupon to save big on a custom photo printed gift last year!
- Coupon extensions for your browser: Honey and CouponMate find coupons for websites as you shop
Create a customized gift
One of my favorite things to do is to create customized gifts based on inside jokes. That way, the gift recipient will always think of you and your “terrific” sense of humor when they see it, for better or for worse.
Last year I designed a t-shirt for my brother with a character & phrase from a favorite childhood computer game. (Twinsen’s Odyssey, if you’re wondering.) We both got a big laugh out of it!
