The Martha Washington Inn & Spa is the queen of Abingdon Virginia hotels. It’s located right in the historic district’s heart, across the street from the Barter Theatre, and within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and even a LOVEWorks statue. It’s the ideal place to stay in Abingdon.

9 REASONS TO LOVE THE MARTHA WASHINGTON INN

1. MARTHA WASHINGTON INN HISTORY

Constructed in 1832 for General Francis Preston and his family for a mere $15,000, the building later became the Martha Washington College for young ladies (named in honor of the first lady). It served as a hospital and barracks during the Civil War, igniting more than a few romances and leading to some fascinating ghost stories.

After the war, “The Martha” transitioned into the elegant 4-diamond hotel and spa it is today.

2. THE VERANDA

You can’t visit the Martha without relaxing on the veranda. Cozy wicker settees and rocking chairs beckon guests to sit and stay awhile.

3. THE GROUNDS ARE STUNNING.

Follow the winding pathways around the hotel, and you’ll discover welcoming gazebos, intimate courtyards, and cozy conversation nooks surrounded by the loveliest garden landscapes.

4. LUXURIOUS GUEST ROOMS AND SUITES

If you have a chance to reserve the Barter Suite at the Martha Washington Inn, DO IT! It’s the only guest room in the entire hotel with a door that opens to the outside. There’s a balcony with a pair of white rocking chairs and a gorgeous view overlooking the front lawn and the Barter Theatre.

And, of course, the suite itself is spectacular. The four-poster bed has a raised mattress platform, so if you’re short (like me), there are bedside footstools to help you climb up, and then gracefully descend, from the soft hugs of the heavenly mattress. That is… if you ever want to descend.

The entire suite is decorated with memorabilia featuring the Barter Theatre’s famous actors and productions.

5. YOU CAN MAKE A SPLASH!

The indoor salt-water heated pool means you can take a dip any day of the year or toast yourself cozy in the heated jacuzzi outside.

6. COMPLIMENTARY BREAKFAST

Start your morning with a cup of hot coffee or orange juice and some freshly baked muffins. A full a la carte menu is available for purchase from 7-10 am.

7. THERE’S FUN OUTSIDE!

An 18-hole putt-putt course is a guaranteed way to have fun, and if that’s not enough, there are tennis courts, bikes, badminton, paddle tennis, and a trampoline out there.

If you decide to go biking, take a ride on the Creeper Trail!

How appropriate for the 18th hole to be a miniature version of “The Martha” herself.

8. YOU CAN NOD OFF WITH A NIGHTCAP

Stop by the front desk for a little glass of port before bedtime. You just have to decide whether to sip it out on the porch or take it to your guest room.

9. THE SPA

My itinerary was packed, so I didn’t have time to enjoy the spa services but believe me, they’re there for you to enjoy. Book a massage or spa beauty treatment for the perfect vacation rejuvenation.

The Martha Washington Inn and Spa is the ultimate place to relax and play in Abingdon.
