We woke up super excited for our first day in New Orleans! Since we were staying at a hotel on Canal Street, the JW Marriott, we were located within walking distance of so many city attractions and restaurants — a beautiful thing.

We took a leisurely stroll to Jackson Square and the French Quarter. Be sure to spend some time here; it’s gorgeous! It’s also the perfect spot from which to start a carriage ride.

Jackson Square carriage rides
Our first stop of the day was Cafe Du Monde, just across the street from Jackson Square. It’s always packed with people, but don’t let that deter you. You’ll find a seat within a minute or two.

IF

Cafe Du Monde draws people in for these delectable beignets, served three to an order and generously sprinkled with powdered sugar.

IF

This was my daughter’s first taste of beignets, so I let her have two of the three, and she didn’t let a gram of that powdered sugar go to waste! She also enjoyed a cup of Cafe au Lait with her fried fritter treats.

IF

After breakfast, we walked across the street to Jackson Square in order to visit The Cabildo, The Presbytere and St. Louis Cathedral.

The Cabildo, St Louis Cathedral, The Presbytere - Jackson Square New Orleans

Left to right: The Cabildo, St. Louis Cathedral, The Presbytere

The Cabildo (which means city council) celebrates the history of the people of Louisiana. So many diverse cultures make up the population, so the exhibits are really interesting.

Did you know: The Cabildo is the site of the Louisiana Purchase transfer!

I’m pretty sure my daughter’s favorite display was this celestial globe.

DD-Cabildo-Celestial Globe

She also enjoyed reenacting some historically classic poses.

Cabildo museum painting - New Orleans

And making pretend music on the drums.

IF

There is so, so much to see in this museum and we spent about an hour there, but we finally left and walked next door to peek inside the St. Louis Cathedral.

IF

Then we decided to take a museum break, so we strolled through some of the stores in the area.

My daughter bought a couple things in the Tabasco Store while I tried to recover from tasting one of their hotter sauces.

IF

We also must have tried thirty different kinds of sauces in the Pepper Palace. They encourage you to keep on tasting… so we did.

IF

We happened upon this relaxing statue so my daughter stopped to relax as well.

IF

Next we went into The Presbytere museum. There is an enormous section of the museum devoted to Hurricane Katrina and it’s extremely well done. It’s both a showcase of the facts and a poignant reminder of the disastrous event in New Orleans history.

This garage door can’t help but call forth emotion when you look it, and there was another exhibit with a Katrina victim’s daily journalings scribbled across the walls of his home. My daughter and I read every bit of it. ( It was peppered with bad language which is why I don’t have a photo here but it was quite powerful and affecting.)

The other major section of The Presbytere celebrates Mardi Gras and the many costumes and traditions that surround it.

After leaving the museum, we walked around the corner and down Decatur Street to the home of the original muffuletta, Central Grocery Company. Neither one of us had ever tried a muffuletta sandwich before and what a fabulous first meal in New Orleans. Muffulettas are crazy good!

Central Grocery Co muffuletta lunch

After lunch we walked to the French Market which was very nearby and casually meandered through the wide assortment of goodies for sale.

French Market-Items for sale

Whether you want souvenirs, clothes, jewelry or food, it’s all at the French Market and the prices are super reasonable.

IF

My daughter found the cutest hat which she wore for most of the remaining time in New Orleans. It looked so cute on her!

DD-shopping for hat in French Market

After we’d finished shopping and since it was a super hot day, we decided to head back to the hotel for a rest, but first we had to stop at Napoleon House for a Pimm’s Cup, their signature drink.

Napoleon House

You must get one, you must! With a mixture of Pimm’s #1, lemonade, Sprite and a cucumber garnish, it’s a light and refreshing cocktail and we absolutely loved it!

Pimm's Cup - Napoleon House - New Orleans Chartres Street

After our sips, we went back to the hotel and while my daughter had planned on taking a quick dip in the hotel pool, we both fell asleep for a nice long afternoon nap.

When we woke up, we were ready for dinner so we walked across Canal Street to Bourbon St and made our way to the Bourbon House restaurant.

We enjoyed some blackened yellowfin tuna and a grilled chicken ‘Bourbon House’ salad, and everything was just delicious. We were also seated right by a huge window so we could people watch (and there’s a lot to watch, believe me).

After dinner, we wandered Bourbon Street for a little bit, but then we went back to the JW Marriott and crashed from our full day of fun? And it was just the first day!!!!

Stay tuned for our day 2 adventures…

New Orleans is such a fun place to visit. I also experienced my first muffuletta from Central Grocery. I’m not a big olive fan at all , but I thought the sandwich was great. And Cafe du Monde….oh my! My mouth is watering for some of those beignets now.

The idea of going to New Orleans used to not appeal to me. It came across as Voodoo City, but I guess I watched too many horror movies in my lifetime. ~lol~ I’d love to visit there someday, though. My husband lived there for a year with his family and they loved it, while my best friend went there recently and had a bad experience with a waitress stealing his credit card to pay for their car insurance online. 😮

I’ve only been to New Orleans once, and it was when my three daughters were competing in the AAU Junior Olympis over a decade ago. I fell in love with the city, and even more so since Vilalobos Rescue moved there from CA. I’d love to be able to spend a couple of weeks in New Orleans. One week to volunteer at the rescue. One week to just explore the city. Your photos do bring back memories – especially since Cafe Du Monde is one of my favorite places in the world. I had a dear friend who lived near ‘Orleans for years and would send me a goodie box of food items every Christmas, and my brother-in-law would always bring me several boxes of mix for the beignets, which became a regular breakfast feature whenever my daughters had sleep-overs. We even did a Mardi Gras themed birthday party for my youngest daughter when she was only about 6-7 years old, thanks to my friend sending me several large boxes of items from her Mardi Gras shop (including a couple of boxes of King cake mix plus extra “babies” so each child would get one and be able to claim a “prize”). That party was one of the last things my daughter’s friend, Emily, was able to participate in before she passed from cancer, so it has really special memories and I loved that Emily was able to have so much fun at the party. I guess you could say that New Orleans is in my blood, even though I’ve only been there once, and with the girls competing at the Junior Olympics, we only had 1-2 days to do any exploring. Now I am itching to go back. Thanks for the post!

Wow! I have yet to travel to NOLA but now after seeing your post I definitely want to plan a trip with hubby. The food looked awesome, your daughter is gorgeous and the picture of the Katrina sign broke my heart. Awesome post, thank you for allowing us to see NOLA through your eyes.

My husband worked in Baton Rouge but would fly in to New Orleans for about a month. He LOVED the food!!! In fact, a few of our now frequent recipes came from his visit to Louisiana!

Ohhh, we live in north Louisiana. My husband and I have talked about taking the kids down to New Orleans some time. We’ve only lived here a year so we haven’t gone yet, but I think a little trip is in order sometime in the near future. I really don’t know much about New Orleans so thanks for this itinerary! I’ll be staying tuned to see what else you do!

    Holy WOW!

I can’t believe that was your guys’ FIRST day; you really packed a heck of a lot of sight seeing and experiences into it, that’s for sure 🙂

I’d love to go to New Orleans one day, just to experience it. From the looks and sounds of it, it’s quite a city to see!

Those beinets are awesome! One of my favorite places in the French Quarter is Laura’s Candy Shop. They have some creole pralines to die for! They are sooooo good!

Wow, what a trip and what a great variety of things to see and do. It’s like every emotion: I was moved by the Katrina display, laughed when I saw your daughter striking poses with the paintings, and made really hungry by the food. What is in a Muffuletta sandwich? Looks so good! Now I really want to go to NOLA even more than before!

Make certain you catch the trolley and go down to the Garden District. On the way back, hop off at The Rink and visit the cemetery across the street. It’s the most fascinating (and creepy) place to catch a glimpse of Nolo’s past.
