With today being the day pretty much every child is back to school, it brings to mind the fact that some of them may be arriving on empty stomachs. We hear this message every year, but that’s because it’s such a monumental problem. It can’t be fixed overnight, and it might be a battle we’ll always have to fight.

So let’s fight it.

For the third year in a row, I’m working with Denny’s in support of the No Kid Hungry Campaign, and I’ll do it every year for as long as children need help!

Two Ways To Help!

1. Make a donation – Now through Oct. 2, every $1 donation received will provide 10 healthy meals to a child in need. Even small donations will yield big results. With your donation, you’ll also receive a discount coupon for your next visit!

2. Share a food pic with hashtag #ShareMySlam on Twitter and Instagram. Each time the hashtag is used, Denny’s will donate $1 to No Kid Hungry!

Sikh master “Guru Nanak Dev Ji” established a concept of Langar (Free kitchen) in Gurudwaras, in 15 century where people can make food and donate money for food supplies. The concept was designed to uphold the equality; where people of all class, religion, and faith eat food without any discrimination. It expresses the ethics of sharing, inclusiveness, community, as well as the oneness of all humankind.

I love this campaign! I’ve worked with elementary school kids for 26 years and I’ve seen those hungry faces. The kids knew that no matter the circumstances they could come to me and I would get them food. Especially when I was the Health Clerk.

Glad to see that Denny’s is supporting the program again. I work in a retail store that includes groceries and the amount of food that we are able to donate to Feed America is great, but the amount of food we have to throw away every day is absolutely devastating. I don’t think people realize that once a food item leaves the store, we have to throw it away (even canned goods and boxed items like cereal and pasta). I always try to discourage people from returning food items for “stupid” reasons (as in unopened food items that were bought by mistake or they are just looking for some quick money back) and explain to them that all food returned has to be thrown away and ask is there anyone that they can give it to or donate to the local food bank. Some people have a heart, but most people don’t care how much we waste every single day. We have so many kids in our local school system that are on public support and it breaks my heart knowing how many children do not get the food that they need on weekends and school holidays.

I am a huge believer that no kid should go hungry I think it’s unfair for some kids to have to make do and go with out simply because they can not provide for themselves and their parents have to. With all the help this country sends over seas there is no reason any kid here should go hungry. I am very passionate about poverty and I love causes like Denny’s no kid goes hungry.
