Spring break has always been a favorite getaway for me. It’s such a welcome escape from school, work and wintry weather.
As a child, most of my spring break vacations were spent in Florida, but I’ve enjoyed taking my kids to a variety of places over the years, and quite frankly, the best spring break destinations for families are far removed from wherever the 20-something college kids are enjoying their spring breaks.
Here’s a list of tried-and-true family-friendly spring break spots that I’ve enjoyed with my own family over the years. You can’t go wrong with any of these.
Tried-and-True Spring Break Destinations for Families
Myrtle Beach Not quite far enough south to draw college spring breakers en masse, but still plenty warm and beautiful, there’s a surprising amount to do with families. There’s a beautiful strand of beaches, piers and ocean walkways to explore, but there’s also an aquarium, museums, amusement parks, SkyWheel, botanical garden, plantations and the most mini golf courses I’ve ever seen in one city!
Washington D.C. My family has visited D.C. twice for spring break, and the best part is that almost all attractions are free. Visit the monuments, Smithsonian museums, FBI building, aquarium, capitol and White House. The zoo is well worth a visit too. Last time I was there, they had two baby giant pandas.
Orlando, Florida – Whether you’re visiting the Universal Orlando Resort, Disney or Kissimmee attractions, it’s a family-friendly and well-loved vacation destination.
Chicago – There’s a lot to do in a relatively compact area of the city, making it super easy to get from place to place. Kids love the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Lincoln Park Zoo and Adler Planetarium, and be sure to stop and see the famous Chicago Bean. Each of the museums has a free admission day, so if you schedule it right, you can save quite a bit of money.
San Diego – Take a bay cruise, explore Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, visit Old Town, and the nearby La Jolla Caves are worth a visit as well.
New York City – There is so much to see, do and eat in New York City. Visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, take a trip to the top of the Empire State Building, take in a Broadway show, visit FAO Schwartz (a kid favorite) and visit Central Park.
This isn’t a complete list of spring break destinations for families by any stretch; there are so many fun places to go. But these are all places that my entire family enjoyed over the years.
