Blackberry dumplings are a southern dessert favorite! They're cooked in a simmering blackberry sauce and can be eaten hot or cold. Delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped topping.
In a skillet over medium heat, stir together blackberries, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt and lemon juice. Use a large spoon to smoosh the berries so they release their juices and stir regularly to ensure the sauce doesn't burn. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and the rest of the salt and sugar. Add milk, stirring just until mixed.
Drop into six mounds over the blackberry sauce. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Top with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
