How to Make Apple Fritters

Warm, crisp fried dough stuffed with apples and sprinkled with powdered sugar. That’s what apple fritters are made of, and they’re darn near irresistible when they’re fresh from the fryer.

While normally I steer clear from frying anything, it’s the only way I know how to make apple fritters and they are so worth putting forth a little extra time and effort in the exercise department.

Besides, we all deserve treats from time to time.

How to Make Apple Fritters

If you use fresh and flavorful apples to make your apple fritters, you’ll take them from great to extraordinary.

Take advantage of u-pick season or make sure you’re using quality apples like these Lady Alice and Honeycrisp apples from Rainier Fruit. They’re some of the best apples I’ve ever tasted — SO full of flavor.

Start by chopping the apples into small pieces. Sneaking a few pieces along the way is highly recommended.

Mix the apple chunks into the batter, and heat your cooking oil in a large pot on the stove to about 360 degrees F. Drop teaspoonsful of batter into the heated oil and fry about 2 1/2 minutes on each side – about 5 minutes in total. They’re small, so it doesn’t take long.

They’re also irregular in shape, but that’s what makes them fun. Who wants perfectly round balls of dough? Not I.

Scoop them out with a large slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels.

They look good already, don’t they? If nobody’s looking, sneak one, but be careful… they’re hot!

After a little bit (a subjective amount of time), sprinkle them with powdered sugar. If they’re still really warm, it’s likely to sort of melt into a glaze. Oops! Just wait “a little bit,” and sprinkle them again.ย Two layers of powdered sugar… what a shame. Not.

They’re best when freshly fried, so have a party with your family and friends and share some apple fritters with the neighbors.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt
  • โ…“ cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • โ…” cup milk
  • 2 apples peeled, cored and diced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ยผ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 quart oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil to 360 degrees. (Make sure you monitor oil temperature during frying.)
  • In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Stir in eggs and milk until well blended. Stir in apples, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Drop in rounded teaspoonsful into the hot oil. Let cook about 2 1/2 minutes on each side. Remove and let drain onto paper towels. Let cool. Dust with powdered sugar.
