Ingredients
Scroll to printable recipe below for exact amounts and directions.
- ground beef (I like an 80/20 or 85/15 blend for this recipe)
- brown gravy mix ( I love Southeastern Mills brown gravy but if it’s not available in your area, use your favorite brown gravy, be it a mix, canned or jarred.)
- mushrooms (Canned or jarred mushroom pieces and stems work perfectly.)
Directions
In a large bowl combine bread crumbs, beaten egg, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper together. Crumble ground beef over the top and mix well. Form into six patties.
Heat coals in a charcoal grill until they turn orange and ash over.
Grill the burger patties over direct heat, with the lid closed, until cooked to desired doneness, flipping once.
Now it’s time to turn them into hamburger steaks with mushroom gravy and you can do this on the stovetop, in the oven or even in the slow cooker.
Stovetop Skillet Directions
Prepare salisbury steak brown gravy according to package directions in stovetop skillet and add grilled patties. Let patties simmer in the gravy, covered, for about 15 minutes. You can add mushrooms at this time too — sprinkle them over the top and kinda push them into the gravy a bit.
Oven-Baked Directions
Place grilled patties into a 9×13-inch baking dish and pour gravy over top. Cover dish tightly with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes at 375 degrees.
Slow-Cooker Directions
Place grilled patties in the slow cooker and cover with gravy. Cook on low for 2-3 hours. (Beef is already cooked on the grill – we’re just looking to infuse the patties with the delicious brown gravy flavor.)
FAQ About Hamburger Steaks with Gravy
It was named after Dr. James Henry Salisbury (1823-1905) who was well known for sharing information on nutrition and diets.
Salisbury steak is served bunless and usually with brown mushroom gravy. The patties are also typically made with add-ins like bread crumbs, egg and seasonings, reminiscent of meatloaf.
Ah, such is the nature of ground beef… but if you chill the patties for a good 30 minutes or so before cooking, it does help.
