Why You’ll Love Mincemeat Cookies

  • Vintage charm: These old-fashioned mincemeat cookies bring back those cozy vibes from days gone by.
  • Soft, chewy, and oh-so-good: Each bite is a delightful mix of softness, chewiness, and rich mincemeat goodness.
  • Quick and easy: Whip up a batch of these mincemeat drop cookies in no time!
  • Zesty orange glaze: The addition of a delightful orange glaze elevates the flavor profile of these cookies, adding a refreshing citrus twist that perfectly complements the rich, spiced mincemeat filling.

Ingredients

ingredients for mincemeat cookies.
  • Vegetable Shortening: Provides moisture and texture to the cookies, resulting in a tender crumb.
  • Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the cookie dough and adds moisture for a soft texture.
  • Eggs: Used as a binding agent to hold the ingredients together and contribute to the structure of the cookies.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Serves as the base ingredient for the cookie dough, providing structure and stability.
  • Salt: Enhances the flavor of the cookies and balances the sweetness of other ingredients.
  • Mincemeat: Adds rich, spiced flavor and texture to the cookies. (I use None Such Classic Original Mincemeat, but they make a Brandy and Rum Mincemeat if you feel sassy.)
  • Baking Soda: Acts as a leavening agent, helping the cookies rise and achieve a light, fluffy texture.
  • Powdered Sugar: Forms the base of the glaze, providing sweetness and thickness.
  • Orange Juice: Adds a tangy flavor and thin consistency to the glaze and complements the spices in mincemeat.

Directions

Step 1: Beat shortening and granulated sugar with mixer on high speed until fluffy. Blend in eggs.

Step 4: Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. (It takes the full 10 minutes in my oven.) Let it sit on a cookie sheet for a minute or two before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Helpful Tips

  • Use a cookie scoop: Consider using a cookie scoop to portion out the dough for evenly sized cookies. This ensures uniformity in size, leading to consistent baking results. (This is the exact cookie scoop I use to make these cookies.)
  • Line baking sheets: Consider lining your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. This prevents the cookies from sticking to the pan and makes cleanup easier.
  • Watch the baking time: Since oven temperatures and baking pans vary, keep an eye on the cookies while they’re in the oven. Bake until lightly golden and set.
  • Cool completely before glazing: Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before adding the glaze. This prevents the glaze from melting and ensures it sets properly on the cookies.
  • Experiment with toppings: Feel free to get creative with toppings! Consider adding a sprinkle of chopped nuts, citrus zest, or even a drizzle of chocolate on top of the glazed cookies for extra flavor and visual appeal.

Recipe FAQ

What is mincemeat?

Mincemeat is a delicious mixture of chopped dried fruit, aromatic spices, sugar, nuts, and, occasionally, distilled spirits. It’s called mincemeat because, in traditional English recipes, mincemeat did include actual meat.

How do I store mincemeat cookies?

Store mincemeat cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze them for longer storage.
